What is a Facelift?
One of the most common surgical procedures every year, facelift surgery involves repositioning skin and tissue to tighten the face, eliminate the signs of aging and restore youthful contours.
Although there are multiple techniques used to perform facelifts, Dr. Papanicolaou typically makes incisions behind the ears and in the scalp and hairline in order to minimize visible scarring. This incision pattern allows our medical team full access to the underlying tissues.
Excess deposits of fat are removed, weakened facial muscles are tightened, and when necessary extra skin is also removed. Dr. Papanicolaou then redrapes the skin, smoothing out skin and eliminating the visible signs of aging.
Facelifts are often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery. These options can be discussed during your consultation.
What Can a Facelift Correct?
Facelift surgery can eliminate several signs of aging from the face and neck, including:
- Sagging in the mid-face
- Loose skin and excess fat pockets in the chin and jaw area that create a double chin appearance
- Areas of sunken fat that result in unnatural facial contours
- Deep creases below the eyelids or extending from the nose to the corner of the mouth
Am I a Good Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
Fine lines, wrinkles and loose skin can be caused by a variety of factors, such as heredity, gravity, stress, and the environment. Both men and women who are healthy, do not smoke or are willing to quit, and have no contraindicating medical conditions that could impair surgery or healing.
Doctor Papanicolaou will discuss your cosmetic expectations and goals with you during your consultation and determine whether facelift surgery is right for you.
What is Recovery Like?
After surgery, a bandage will be placed around your face and head to reduce swelling and protect your new facial contours. Bruising and swelling will be present for several weeks, but your full results will be visible after these subside. Surgical drains may also be placed to collect excess fluid.
Doctor Papanicolaou will give you post-surgical instructions to care for your incision sites and reduce the risk of infection and complications, and your healing and progress will be monitored through follow-up appointments.
