What is Chin Enhancement Surgery?
Medically known as mentoplasty, chin enhancement surgery reshapes the prominence of the chin using either implants or reducing the chin bone. As the size and shape of your chin is responsible for the overall balance of your facial features, chin enhancement is often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as nose surgery.
Incision placement will be discussed with you during your consultation, but Dr. Papanicolaou will typically create incisions either in the natural crease underneath the chin or inside the mouth to minimize visible scarring.
Once the incisions are made. Dr. Papanicolaou will modify the underlying tissues to make room for the chin implant. If the bone is being reduced, it will be precisely sculpted to a more pleasing size. There are multiple techniques used to perform chin enhancement surgery, and Dr. Papanicolaou will use the one best suited for your individual needs.
Am I a Good Candidate for Chin Enhancement Surgery?
Men and women who are approved for this procedure typically meet the following criteria:
- Have chins that are too small in proportion to the rest of their face
- Are undergoing nose surgery and also need the chin modified to maintain facial balance
- Have prominent chins that are too large in relation to other facial features
- Require chin enhancement has part of facial reconstruction surgery
- Are in generally good health with no contraindicating medical conditions
- Have realistic cosmetic expectations for surgery
What is Recovery Like?
Post-surgery swelling and discomfort will be present for the first few days, and chewing may be limited during initial healing. A soft food and liquid may be required for a short amount of time. After about six weeks, all swelling should subside and your new facial contours should be fully visible.
Although vigorous should be avoided for a few weeks while your face heals, normal activities may be resumed after about 10 days. Although surgical scars are permanent, they will fade over time.
