What is Breast Augmentation?
Also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation surgery improves the size and shape of women’s breasts using either saline or silicone implants. Advances in this procedure make several techniques available, and Dr. Papanicolaou will discuss these options with you during your consultation.
When choosing either saline or silicone implants, there are several factors to take into consideration. Knowing the differences and benefits of both types can help you make a more informed decision:
- Saline implants are typically filled after they are placed inside the breast, allowing more control over the size of the enhancement and often resulting in a smaller incision. Saline tends to be the more popular option, as it is absorbed by the body in the event of a leak or rupture.
- Silicone implants have been used in over one million augmentation surgeries worldwide and now contain an improved, FDA-approved viscous gel that can be customized depending on the patient’s cosmetic goals. The gel filler acts as more of a solid than saline implants, modifying size and shape while maintaining the give of natural breast tissue.
In addition to there being multiple incision options, you will also have the ability to choose where in the breast the implant is placed in order to achieve your desired results. Dr. Papanicolaou will help you decide which look creates the most natural, symmetrical results for your body type.
What is Recovery Like?
Bandages and a support bra will need to be worn to support the breasts as they heal. Surgical drains may also be placed to prevent the buildup of excess fluid. Most patients can return to work and light activities within a few days following surgery. Normal physical activities, including sports, are generally permitted after about four weeks.
It is normal for the skin to feel tight after surgery, but this will subside as the breasts adjust to their new size. Your healing and results will be monitored by Dr. Papanicolaou through follow-up appointments.
Although breast implants are designed to be long-lasting, they should be checked annually and replaced every 10-15 years.
